Our Sisters on Ethiopian Airlines Flight #409

 Press release:

We members of the Ethiopian Women for Peace and Development (EWPD) would like to express our deep felt sympathy for those who perished in the ill-fated Ethiopian Airlines flight 409, which was scheduled to fly from Beirut (Lebanon) to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). We acknowledge that all 90 peoples who were killed are important to their families: but, at this tragic moment we want to highlight our 23 young Ethiopian sisters who died in this accident. These women were hired as domestic workers and were returning to their families.  The women have endured harsh and un ethical treatment from their employers in the form of psychological and physical abuses. The tragic fact is that their conditions were forced upon them because of the economic needs to support their families, elderly parents, siblings who are chronically unemployed and in some cases helping distant relatives. This sub-human treatment of our sisters continues even after the untimely death of these women. Attached with this press release you will find an article from the Huffington post written by journalist Patrick Galey stationed in Beirut, which exposes the situation clearly.

As you all know, change has to start from the home front. The source of the problem is the work of the enablers who facilitate the exportation of our sisters for their   financial gain.    The misery of these unfortunate women and their working condition have been known and ignored. The responsibility lies on the Ethiopian government who is allowing this misery to continue.  Please take time out of your hectic schedule to read, reflect back, and suggest some ways how you can participate in stopping this cruel practice.
